Why you shouldn’t hire a personal trainer!

Working out at a big box gym does not work for most people.

Most people have good intentions, but the truth is that most show up at the gym without a plan. They do the same thing over and over again, they get bored, and worst of all, they don’t see any improvement OR results!

After a few weeks or months, they stop going regularly. Why do you think the membership is $15 a month? Most people who have a membership simply never show up!

Maybe this is you and you’ve thought…..

“I should get a personal trainer to help me improve your health and fitness.”

You wouldn’t be the first, but I’m here to tell you that 99% of people should NOT hire a personal trainer.

So why don’t I like personal trainers? I actually think personal trainers can be great. So let’s start with the 1% of people who should hire a personal trainer.

Hire a personal trainer if you:

  • Are an elite athlete looking for an advantage.Example: You’re a high school senior that’s being looked at by colleges and you want to work on very specific skills that might get you a scholarship.

  • Are coming back from a serious injury and need personal attention during the rehab process. Example: You had rotator cuff surgery, you are cleared to work out and you want someone to work with you to make sure you get your golf swing back to 100%.

  • You like 1 on 1 personal attention and you have resources to pay a personal trainer. Example: You enjoy working with someone one on one and paying $80-$100 a session 3 days a week ongoing is not an issue.

From my experience, 99% of the population do not fit into one of these three categories. The following are the most common reasons I hear for people wanting to start a workout program:

  • Build strength and increase mobility

  • Improve their endurance

  • Lose weight

  • Have more defined muscles

  • Have more energy

  • Be more active

So if any or some of those are your goals, I would say you should NOT hire a personal trainer. But why?

To achieve any of those goals and see real lasting improvements, you need to be involved in a program where you exercise regularly (3-5 days a week) for at least the next 6-9 months, and hopefully much longer than that.

That may not be what you want to hear, but you’re not going to build sufficient strength, increase your overall baseline energy, or have sustained weight loss with 10 personal training sessions. Most people will enjoy the 10 sessions but go right back to where they were before they started.

So unless you are willing to hire a personal trainer for a minimum 3 days a week ongoing, (~$900/month) it doesn’t make sense to purchase 5, 10, or even 20 personal training sessions.

So what is your best option?

I recommend joining an instructor-led, class-based fitness program.
