Have you ever heard the phrase: “counting your macros”? Ever wondered what in the world macros are?
In this case, “macros” is shorthand for macronutrients, which refers to a category of nutrients that the human body requires in large amounts. The three macronutrients counted are (1) carbohydrates, (2) fats, and (3) proteins.
In short, your body needs significant amounts of each one of these nutrients each day in order to support essential functions.
So then, what are micronutrients? You may be able to guess! These are nutrients that the body needs in smaller amounts, but they are just as important. These include vitamins and minerals like calcium, zinc, and vitamin B-6.
Ideally, a balanced diet will provide all these nutrients! It’s important to include portions of all these types of nutrients in order to support your entire body.
For example, carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy – we can’t do without those! Protein provides the building blocks of muscle and tissue repair, and fats are essential for energy storage, hormone regulation production, and good ole insulation.
Micronutrients support various other bodily functions, such as immune system health.
Understanding how these terms are used in various dietary recommendations (and on nutrition labels) can help you to make informed decisions about how to provide your body with the best nutritional support possible…. especially if you’re hitting the gym!
