How do I avoid the summer slump?

As a kid, the final ring of a school bell used to symbolize freedom – an open door to a summer full of sunshine, sleeping in, and schedule-free fun!
But, sometimes, as an adult, the change in schedule in the summertime can undermine our carefully curated habits. We might have kids experiencing the aforementioned freedom, travel planned, and barbecues and summer parties galore. Then, inevitably, we trudge back into autumn feeling sluggish and out of sorts.
So how can we adapt with the changes of the season and finish summer feeling just as strong as we did at the beginning?
Consider the following - lose the “all or nothing” mindset. Every little bit helps.
With daily movement: Exploring a new city? Walk! Getting on a plane? Get up and stretch. Stuck in a hotel room? Check out an easy 20 minute yoga flow or bodyweight strength workout on Youtube. Every one of those minutes stack up to make you feel better.
With exercise & workouts: Can’t get to the gym four times a week? Go two or three. Even one! Don’t stop all together! Momentum may slow down, but don’t let it stop. A workout that incorporates cardio and strength training is the best bang for your buck - both with money and time - and RiseUp will get you that every time.
With food: Enjoy great meals and don’t feel guilty, but eat the good and healthy stuff when you can. Having a big and beautifully indulgent dinner on vacay? Awesome! Home for a week? Get back on track so you feel good.
And, yes, with drinks: Enjoy your bevs, but remember to drink water and be careful with the heat. More bevs doesn’t always mean a better day, or a better tomorrow. Other ideas if you want to be careful with the alcohol content? There’s a huge range of lower ABV and non-alcholic options!
The bottom line? Grown-ups can enjoy all the fun and joy that summer has to offer, but with a little shift in mindset (and therefore avoiding any snowballing!), we can feel great all season long!
