Why being “bad at the gym” is a good thing!

Everyone starts somewhere.

Did you ever teach your kid to ride a bike? To swim? To read?

When they first put their feet on the pedals, or paddled into the pool with floaties, or opened a book - were they any good at it? Probably not.

Did you tell them to stop and give up, just because they weren’t any good yet? I doubt it!

Maybe you don’t have a child - but do you remember the first time that you did something new when you were a kid? I’m guessing that you weren’t perfect right out of the gate either.

So when did we begin to let the fear of doing something slowly or poorly or carefully at first stop us from doing it? If we do that with everything forever, then we’re stuck right where we are, never improving, progressing, or learning.

The same questions and observations apply to the gym. We don’t want to be stuck in our same physical state (and mental state!) and then, to slowly deteriorate over time because we’re nervous about being “bad at it.” Instead, consider this possibility - just like when you taught your kid a new skill, or when you learned one yourself, the only way to go is up.

What a thrilling concept! You can only get better from here. That’s why being “bad at the gym” is a great thing, and choosing the mindset of progress is the keystone to your future success.

And guess what… everyone else is right there with you. At RiseUp Fitness, we have beginners in every class, and every workout is an opportunity to get a little bit better, with the guidance and motivation from trainers who only guide, and never judge.
